TOUR DESCRIPTION

The private tour “Painters on the French Riviera” is dedicated to four worldwide-recognized painters of the 20th century, who lived in this region. Why Marc Chagall, Henry Matisse, Pablo Picasso and Pierre August Renoir were so attracted by the famous Côte d’Azur?

This private tour is about discovering facts and anecdotes, which will help you answer this question, and it goes beyond that. You will see the creations of these painters, which you will not be able to see anywhere else (how would you displace a chapel or a mosaic)! No worries, however, it’s NOT just a “Museums” tour! You will visit a few towns and walk in the places where these painters worked in the last century. The special focus will be on Saint-Paul-de-Vence, which has been the place for artists to live, work and meet since the 1920s.

A few details about the tour: you will visit the National Museum of Chagall in Nice, see Chagall’s tomb in his beloved Saint-Paul-de-Vence, and visit the Maeght Foundation in the same village, which displays many art pieces of some the most famous painters and sculptors of the world.

We will see two small chapels, painted and decorated by Matisse and Picasso in Vence and Vallauris, respectively. Matisse, for whom Nice became his hometown after he moved here from the North of France, said “the Chapel in Vence was probably his most important art creation although with many imperfections”. For Picasso, the Vallauris period is undeniably linked to his pottery art period. You will also have a chance to see some of his pottery pieces.

A very interesting visit will finally be the house and workshop of Renoir, in Cagnes-sur-Mer. While walking around his house and the orange tree garden, you will get the feeling about how the artist’s long, composed of ups and downs, career, ended.

Marsatis’ advice

All the places mentioned above will be part of this 8-hour private tour. Entry fees for the museums/chapels are not included. It is possible to skip some of museums or chapels and spend more time elsewhere. This is why the price indicated for this private tour is just for the vehicle (max. 8 people) and the driver-guide. Once you contact us, we will send you the list of museums/chapels, with details and entry fees per person.

If you are looking for a more personalised tour, please consult our Private Chauffeur service.

"Marcin was absolutely great. Our inbound flight was delayed more than four hours yet he was there to meet us when we finally arrived in Nice. He is very knowledgeable of the area and provided us with important information while driving us to our hotel.
Marcin was there to meet us on time as agreed for our return to the airport.
His price for 6 people with luggage was very reasonable.
I could not recommend anyone more highly."
